Viruses are not living creatures, however, to reproduce, they must use living things. The virus goes to a living thing and injects its DNA into it, which causes the proteins to be made which build the virus. The proteins are assembled and make miniature viruses which burst the host cell and destoys it, this allows the viruses to invade the rest of your body. This is called the lytic cycle. The lysogenic cycle is similar, but a little different. A virus injects its DNA into a living cell and takes it over, therefore, the cell divides and creates more virus infected cells. If exposed to different conditions, these cells may burst too.
Virii pass on their genetic information just like any other organism. They destroy hosts because apparently at some time there was a selective pressure which encouraged this kind of mechanism.
Viruses work to reproduce. If they didn't do that then there wouldn't be any of them left. The sneakiest ones don't do too much damage too fast or the victim dies before they get to pass it on.

Too slow and the immune system will destroy the virus. However a virus like HIV is slow but knocks out the immune system so in most people it never gets destroyed.

Even more amazing was a report that an immuno-suppressing virus like HIV was actually incorporated into mammal cells and was responsible for the development of the placenta. Without virusses we would not exist or any other mammals so they don't all destroy.
